About National Service Scheme
National Service Scheme is a Central Government Educational Programme started in the year 1969. It is functioning under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports at the national level and under the Ministry of Higher Education at the State level. Mahatma Gandhi University NSS was started in 1984.
Our SJIHMCT NSS was established in the year 2022, as a funded unit. We started with our first unit with 50 NSS Volunteers. Under M G University, we are the first Hotel Management college with an NSS unit.
The major aim of the National Service Scheme is the development of the personality of students through community service.
NSS Motto
The motto of NSS is ‘NOT Me But You’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings.
NSS Logo
The symbol of the NSS is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the moment in life across time and space.
NSS Day
National Service Society was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes & activities.
NSS Programmes
The National Service Scheme has two types of programmes: Regular Activities and Special Camping Programmes. Students enrolled as NSS Volunteers are expected to work in the scheme for a period of two years and also participate in Special Camping Programmes of 7 days duration.
Volunteer Activities
NSS volunteers undertake various activities on campus, in adopted villages, and in slums for community service. The duration of these services is 120 hours, which includes:
- 20 hours for the orientation of NSS volunteers
- 30 hours for campus work
- 70 hours for community service
In regular NSS programmes, students participate in various activities on the college campuses and in adopted villages, cities, and slums during weekends. Adoption of a village or an area is a meaningful programme in NSS.
Special Camping Programmes
Special Camping forms an integral part of the National Service Scheme. It has a special appeal to the youth, as it provides unique opportunities for group living, collective experience sharing, and constant interaction with the community. Special camps are generally organized on various developmental issues of national importance. Previous themes of the Special Camping Programmes have included:
- 'Youth Against Famine'
- 'Youth Against Dirt and Disease'
- 'Youth for Rural Reconstruction'
- 'Youth for Eco-Development'
- 'Youth for Mass Literacy'
- 'Youth for National Integration & Social Harmony'
